Giggling, and heeding Norai's advice, she soothed, "You didn't do anything. It's alright...I was only joking!"

"Oh... phew. Okay. That's good. Sorry." Demitri. "Okay."

Sasha finally decided to sit down, taking a spot next to Kinny. It was mildly funny how they were sitting in the middle of the Main Hall and petting dogs...well, on was technically not a dog, but couldn't be petted, and therefore could be called one. "When'd you decide to become a mage?"

"Huh? Well, when I figured I could do magic. It was after my little sister died, and I decided that I had to do something with my life to help people, and that was a wonderfully presented opportunity, don't you think?"

"I'm so sorry," said Sasha, shocked. "Terribly...." Kinny, although not the brightest, could sense moods, and now worriedly asked, Sadsad? Someone sadsad?

"No, it's fine, Kinny. No one's sad-sad. Oh, it's fine now. I was twelve at the time, though, and we were very close. But it's not like I saw her brutally murdered or anything. I just woke up one morning and she wasn't there. We figured she'd wandered out and gotten lost or something, and shortly afterward we moved away."

Oh, he sighed. No sadsad is good. Sasha looked at him in slight confusion. "Then how do you know she's dead?"

"Because she was seven, we were high on a mountain in the middle of winter, and my parents said so. Yes. No sad-sad is good, Kinny."

The dog lifted from his bone to nod. I know. i smart. Here was where Sasha should've broke down laughing, but she wastoo preoccupied with what the mage had said. "Well, I suppose...but isn't there a chance...?"

"Yes, indeed. You are smart." Norai snorted. Demitri ignored her. "I always thought so, but what was I supposed to do? I was twelve, and I hadn't learned to use my magic yet, and I was, frankly, terrified to go outside without her."

Kinny was now tired of talking, and merely sent a satisfied and happy feeling as he returned to the bone. Sasha shrugged, intrigued. "Well, did they ever find any remnants? Maybe she got away, or someone found her...."

Demitri winced at the thought of finding 'remnants' of his beloved little sister. "No, we didn't," he answered. "Got away? It's really hard to get away from the winter. And I hope no one found her, because the people nearby... well, they weren't very good people."

"But maybe they did find her! I mean, anything's possible, right? And even if they weren't very nice, maybe she survived the winter with them and then escaped..." Trailing off, as her own words sounded feeble to her own ears, Sasha turned slightly pink.

Demitri smiled at her ruefully. "It's okay, really. Don't worry about it. Honestly, though, I searched everywhere for her, and if she was still alive, I'm almost certain I would have found her. Anyway, let's talk about something else. What about you? Where are you from?"

"Oh? Me? I'm from the Town nearby. No mountaintop for me," said Sasha, still a bit caught on the idea of Demitri's sister.
