"Oh. You're sure?" She was. "All right, then... Do you want me to go away now?"

"Only if you want to leave," she said noncimmitably, not really caring whether he stayed or not.

She probably didn't want him around. "Erm... well... All right... You're busy, I can see... I don't want to be a bother..."

She shrugged. "You'll only be a bother if you make yourself one," she said cryptically. Saulin almost pouted. But I like you!

"I like you, too," Demitri assured Saulin. But I don't think your human likes me... he added to himself. "But I don't think your human wants me around," he said instead.

"I told you, I could care less." Era was getting impatient. Couldn't he see that she didn't mind if he stayed or left?! Saulin was happy, and fluttered his wings, barely carrying himself off the ground before resettling.

Demitri twitched uncertainly. She certainly didn't seem happy about his being there, and she seemed like she should want him to go, but she said she didn't, and Saulin said he wanted him to stay... "All right, then. I'll stay until you want me to leave, Era."

"Good. I do need some help..." It was hard to set up the one thing on her own. Just her mini little 'transportable' desk, which was supposed to be triggered by the press of a button, but instead seemed to always need to be put up by hand.

Demitri immediately sprang to his feet, careful not to knock Saulin, and went over. "What do you need me to do? I've never set one of these up before, so you'll have to give me instructions, if you don't mind." Yep. Still cheerful.

What did he expect her to do, leave him hanging with no know-how? She held the woooden cube, pressing the smaller button on the side to get it to spring outwards. Of course, the thing came out wrong- two of the legs were on the top rather than bottom, the drawers were inside out, the handles had appeared on the top, the carvings on it were moving around, and Era was muttering soemthing unintelligible. "Really, it's supposed to be a magic desk, which compacts. I've had it for so long that the spells are falling apart, and I'm afraid I haven't the skill (I've got the knowledge) to fix it. Fortunately, it takes minimal skill and a bit of effort to coax it into going right...but it does have a mind of its own. So you've got to convince it. Which takes awhile."

"Well, once we've got it up, I can figure out how to renew the spells," Demitri offered, staring dubiously at the rather insane-looking desk-thing.

"That'd be wonderful. Although the spells are quite old...maybe five hundred years? you'd have to strip them off first." Era turned to the desk, merely looking at it, although there was a sense that she was using soem sort of ambiguous magic on it. The desk rocked once before settling, perfectly fine with the way it was.

Demitri nodded. "Okay, well, it's balanced, but I don't think it's going to be helpful while shaped like that..."

"Exactly my point. And the carvings make me dizzy." Still she continued to try to persuade it, and managed to get one of the legs to flip to the other side, while wondering if Demitri was going to help.

Realizing that he was staring blankly at the dysfunctional desk and not helping, Demitri reached over and fiddled with the other leg, which quickly- but somehow whilst giving off the impression that it was being forced against its will and good sense- slid to the other side. Now for the drawers. How were they even like that?
